THE Korean embassy plans to bring in basketball legend Shin Dong Pa as part of a series of sports and cultural events to be held in June in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Shin has visited the country numerous times, but Korea ambassador Han Dong Man said this year’s planned visit could coincide with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the Philippines.

“We are trying to talk to Shin Dong Pa. If he is okay, we will bring a Korean team to have a friendly match here. Now, we are in the process of talking to Shin Dong Pa,” said Dong during a press conference at the PSC office on Tuesday.

PSC chairman William Ramirez, for his part, said they will be inviting Philippine basketball legend Robert Jaworski if Shin’s visit to the country pushes through.

Jaworski had several battles with Shin and the rest of the Korean team during the 1960s and the 1970s. He was part of the Philippine team that won the Asian title in 1973, at the expense of Shin and Korea.

“We plan to invite also Jaworski to reminisce their playing days,” said Ramirez.

Shin is considered one of the best shooters that Asia has ever produced. He once scored 48 points against the Philippines in the gold medal match of the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Championship, now called the Fiba-Asia Cup.
